There are many great things about playing the guitar. Learning to play the guitar is one of the coolest things you can do. I have been playing the guitar for over 30 years and and it has enriched my life immensely.
There are so many reasons that you need to play guitar that I had to narrow it down to 10. Here they are, in no particular order:
1. Playing guitar is one of the most relaxing things you can do.
For stress relief and just pure relaxing goodness, nothing beats playing the guitar. After a long day at work, I can’t wait to get in some play time. I usually practice for 10 minutes or so on a particular song or chord or lick. Then I will strum for 10 more minutes. I can actually feel the stress leave my body. My breathing slows down and I just feel better. On the days that I don’t play guitar, I know it. And so does my wife. She will sometimes ask me “do you need to go play a little guitar?” I usually answer yes and play a bit and immediately feel better.
2. Playing guitar is like hanging out with an old friend
You know those friends that you have had for so long that you don’t even have to talk much and you enjoy each other’s company? My guitar is like that. I have been playing my Martin DR-1 almost exclusively for about 15 years. We don’t need to talk much, just hang out. We get each other….
3. Playing guitar helps you live in the moment
When I am hanging out with my “old friend” I am living in the moment. No job, no deadlines, no calendar, no stress, no drama, no problems and nothing to hurry up about. We have so much of that in our lives already. It will all be there when you get done playing. So take a moment to play and learn and relax RIGHT NOW. Live in the moment. I know I don’t do that enough. I am always worrying about something. Or I am distracted with all of the things going on in my life. I expect many of you are too.
4. Playing guitar is fun.
We all need to have a little fun. Playing the guitar is an easy way to have some fun. Just make some time for something you love to do and pick up that guitar. For me, nothing is more fun than learning that new chord, or song or lick.
5. Playing guitar keeps your mind sharp
Playing the guitar will help keep your mind sharp. My mom is 80 years old and learned to play the guitar about 10 years ago. She play everyday. It brings her joy. And it is a proven fact that playing the guitar makes you smarter. You are exercising that brain when you memorize a progression. You are sharpening that brain when you practice those scales. The old adage “use it or lose it” certainly applies here.
6. Playing the guitar can introduce you to all kinds of cool people
When you play guitar you have the opportunity to meet cool people at the music shop, or at a jam session, or online. For example, you have the chance to meet people in the Relax and Learn guitar membership. You don’t have to learn the guitar alone. I am available to help you out and you can talk to and hang out with the other people in membership. You will be glad you joined!
7. Playing guitar is something that you have always wanted to do.
You have always wanted to play guitar but maybe did not think you were talented enough. You used to play, but life got in the way and that old guitar just collecting dust. Now is the time to pick it back up. You are talented enough to learn the guitar. With some practice, patience, feedback and support from someone who has been there, you will be shocked at how well you will do. It is a marathon, not a sprint. The time you put in will be well rewarded.
8.Playing the guitar is a great way to spend some time on yourself
You have worked a job for others, you have met your obligations, maybe you have raised a family. It is time to focus on you for awhile. You have always wanted to play and the time is now. There is no better way, in my opinion, than playing guitar to invest time and energy in yourself and your own growth.
9. Playing guitar makes you appreciate music and enjoy listening to it even more.
I am a music junkie. I love discovering new bands and learning new styles. Maybe you don’t think you can possibly enjoy listening to music any more than you do now. But playing the guitar will open up new doors for you. New styles new artists, new sounds. And when you can start making those sounds yourself…..it’s magic.
10. Playing the guitar is a rewarding hobby
I can not think of a more rewarding hobby than playing the guitar. For all the reasons above, playing the guitar will enrich your life and bring you so much joy. Get started today and check out all the free lessons and information at Relax and Learn Guitar.
